New series points leader Ryan Dungey set the stage for tonight’s round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series at Anaheim, Calif., by setting the fastest qualifying time in surprisingly dry conditions at Angel Stadium.
Ryan Dungey set the fastest time in practice at A2.
With heavy rains drenching the area for most of the week, many expected muddy conditions at least in practice for today’s event, but the Dirt Wurx crew did an excellent job of keeping the racetrack dry throughout the week, and brought in truckloads of sand early this morning to mix with the existing soil and the result was an excellent and fairly dry racing surface.
Due to the weather, today’s practice was limited to just two sessions, with the first one a five-minute non-timed session. Dungey topped the second session – the timed session – putting his Rockstar Makita Suzuki at the top of the time charts with a 59.476. Just two-tenths back came San Manuel Yamaha’s Josh Hill will a 56.689, followed by JGRMX/Muscle Milk/Toyota/Yamaha’s Justin Brayton with a 59.747.
Defending series champ James Stewart cut his practice session short, turning only three laps in the timed session, but still posted the fourth-fastest time with a 59.777. Stewart moved gingerly when he dismounted his San Manuel-backed YZ450F after practice and is obviously still feeling the effects of his crash last week at Phoenix.
The fifth-fastest time was posted by GEICO Powersports Honda’s Kevin Windham at 1:00.269, while Suzuki’s Austin Stroupe (1:00.466), Red Bull Honda’s Davi Millsaps (1:00.486), Honda’s Andrew Short (1:00.566), Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto (1:00.858) and Rockstar Suzuki Canidae Motosports’ Tommy Hahn (1:01.488) rounded out the top 10.
Jake Weimer topped teammate Josh Hansen for fastest time in the Lites class.
In the Lites division, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammates Jake Weimer and Josh Hansen were fastest; with Weimer’s 1.00.196 trumping Hansen’s 1:00.705.
TLD Honda’s Wil Hahn was third-fastest with a 1:00.885, with Suzuki’s Ryan Morais (1:01.500) and Star Yamaha’s Broc Tickle (1:02.062) finishing fourth and fifth.
